Does Internal Dust Affect Image Quality?

It depends on the lens and the contamination.

Dust inside a lens and dust on a sensor are different problems.

Internal particles are not usually sharply imaged, but this is not a guarantee of unaffected contrast or image quality.

Compare photographs at the apertures and lighting conditions you use. Visible specks under a torch alone cannot quantify performance.

When Should You Be Concerned?

Not all contamination is the same. Here’s how to understand the difference.

Dust

Small particles may have little visible effect. Assess the actual lens and sample images.

Fungus

May appear as threads or web-like marks. Suspected fungus needs qualified assessment.

Haze

A cloudy appearance that reduces contrast and sharpness.

Scratches

Marks on glass surfaces that can affect image quality.

Separation

Possible separation of cemented elements needs qualified assessment.

Do not confuse dust with damage. Suspected fungus, haze, scratches or separation needs assessment; an illustration cannot diagnose a lens.

How to assess a particular lens

Keep three questions separate: what is visible inside the lens, what the inspection records, and what appears in photographs. The level cards and diagrams here are illustrations, not measured optical thresholds or photographs of a listed unit.
Ask for original sample images from the exact lens, using a compatible body at more than one aperture. Check an evenly lit scene and a scene with bright light near the frame for repeatable marks or loss of contrast.
A spot in an image can have causes other than internal lens dust. Sony’s sensor-cleaning guidance explains checks for sensor contamination; follow the correct model manual instead of attempting to clean inside a lens.
Thread-like marks, cloudiness or suspected element separation need a qualified assessment. Do not attempt to treat fungus or dismantle a lens based on an illustration.
